Laying inside your camera is sophisticated technology that has evolved over the last 50 years. The question is – how do you get the best out of your camera? Or, if you’re a complete newbie, how do you even use it? The answers are in this ebook. Your camera is capable of a lot of things. There is so much it can do that I’m not even going to attempt to cover it all here. Instead, my aim is to make the process of learning to use your camera as simple as possible. Out of all the functions on your camera, there are only a few you need to know how to use in order to create beautiful and memorable photos.
These are the ones that I am going to cover. It’s all about fundamentals. Once you understand how basic functions like aperture, shutter speed, ISO, white balance, histograms and Picture Control work, you can learn about the other stuff in your own time, when you need to. When you start out it’s natural to feel intimidated by the work of advanced or professional photographers. Don’t be. You’ll be surprised at how easy it is to get started once somebody explains it to you the right way. This ebook is illustrated with photos that are here to inspire you as well show you how your camera works. The aim is to light a fire. I want to inspire you to use your camera and go out and learn to take beautiful images. At first, your photos are unlikely to look anything like the ones in this ebook. That’s natural – don’t forget I have years of experience. It takes time to learn the craft of photography. The key is to acknowledge that. Instead of feeling down if you feel your images can’t compare with the those of the experienced photographers you most admire, use it as inspiration. This ebook is just a starting point. The creative triangle
Good photos are comprised of three factors: technique, light and composition. I call this the creative triangle. A good photo is well composed and lit by beautiful light. The photographer has the technical expertise required to operate the camera and make the creative decisions required to capture the best possible image. This concept is represented by a triangle in the diagram opposite. Lighting, composition and technique are all equally important. That’s why, throughout the ebook, I’ll be talking about light and composition as well as showing you how to operate the camera. The three factors work together. If you want to become a good photographer, let alone a great one, you constantly need to think about these three factors: 1. How to operate your camera and exercise total control over the settings. 2. What is the best lighting for your subject. 3. What is the best way to compose the image. This is an ebook designed to show you how to use your digital camera. Learn more at
